What is an EMI?
An EMI (equated monthly instalment) is the fixed amount you pay your lender every month until a loan is repaid.
Each EMI has two parts: the interest for that month and a repayment of the principal, the amount you borrowed.
Home loans, car loans, personal loans and education loans in India are usually repaid this way, on a reducing
balance: interest is charged only on the principal that is still outstanding.
How is EMI calculated?
Every EMI calculator, including this loan EMI calculator, uses the standard formula:
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1)
P
the principal, the loan amount you borrow
r
the monthly interest rate: the yearly rate divided by 12 and by 100
n
the tenure in months, the number of EMIs
Worked example
For a loan of ₹10,00,000 at 6.5% a year for 5 years:
P = ₹10,00,000, r = 6.5 / 12 / 100 (about 0.5417% a month) and
n = 60. The EMI is ₹19,566.15, about ₹19,566 a month.
Over 60 months you pay ₹1,73,969 in interest, so the total amount paid is
₹11,73,969.
How to use this calculator
Enter the loan amount, the yearly interest rate and the tenure in years or months.
Choose the month of your first EMI.
Optionally open Prepayment and add extra monthly or yearly payments or one-time lump sums.
Press Calculate to see your EMI, total interest and the amortization schedule.
Download the schedule as CSV, or print it or save it as a PDF.
What is an amortization schedule?
An amortization schedule lists every EMI with its split between principal and interest and the balance left
afterwards. Early in the loan the balance is high, so most of each EMI is interest. As the balance falls, the
interest part shrinks and a larger share of every EMI repays the principal, until the balance reaches zero.
How prepayment reduces your interest
A prepayment is money you pay on top of your EMI. It goes straight to the principal, so the balance and every
future month's interest drop. This prepayment calculator lets you choose what happens next:
Reduce tenure
Your EMI stays the same and the loan closes earlier. This usually saves the most interest.
Reduce EMI
The loan keeps its original end date and the EMI is recalculated, so you pay less every month.
Factors that affect your EMI
Loan amount
A larger loan means a larger EMI and more interest in total, at the same rate and tenure.
Interest rate
A higher rate raises both the EMI and the total interest. Even a small difference adds up over a long home loan EMI.
Tenure
A longer tenure lowers the EMI but increases the total interest; a shorter tenure does the opposite.
Frequently asked questions
How is loan EMI calculated?
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (the yearly rate divided by 12 and by 100) and n is the number of monthly instalments. Each month the interest is charged on the balance still owed, and the rest of the EMI repays the principal.
Does a longer tenure reduce my EMI?
Yes. Spreading the same loan over more months lowers the monthly EMI, but you pay interest for longer, so the total interest goes up. A shorter tenure means a higher EMI and less interest in total.
Is it better to reduce EMI or tenure after a prepayment?
Reducing the tenure keeps your EMI the same and closes the loan earlier, which usually saves more interest. Reducing the EMI keeps the end date and lowers the monthly amount, which helps your monthly budget. The calculator shows both results so you can compare them.
Is the result exact?
The calculator uses exact decimal arithmetic, rounds every month's interest to the paisa and adjusts the last instalment so the loan closes at exactly zero. Your lender's figures can still differ slightly because of its own rounding, fees and rate changes, so treat the result as an estimate.
Can I use it for home, car and personal loans?
Yes. It works for any loan repaid in equal monthly instalments on a reducing balance, such as home loans, car loans, personal loans and education loans.
Can I download my amortization schedule?
Yes. Press Download CSV to get the full month-by-month schedule for Excel or Google Sheets, or Print / Save as PDF for a clean printable report.
Is my data saved?
No. The calculation runs when you press Calculate and nothing you enter is stored, logged or kept in a cookie. Refreshing the page clears the result.
